The SMILE project impacts poor, illiterate or neo-literate women in villages surrounding Phnom Penh. It aims to improve women’s level of literacy, build literate environments at home and improve the health condition of mothers and children.
A recent survey of members of the new SMILE classes shows that a lack of self-confidence is a common factor in why women sign up to the classes: "I am an illiterate person. When people talk to me they think I am foolish. People have to read and write for me, I know nothing"
